An appeal to some of the good people that inhabit this planet?

Sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders. You seem to be aware of what needs to happen but lack the means to do it. The best thing you can do is educate young people. A good place to start is exactly what you are doing by volunteering. Perhaps look into joining Big Brothers or Big Sisters and become a role model for someone. The more people that think the way you do the more chance we stand to make a difference. Good for you for being active!
