A question about the so-called Bible Belt ?

When someone is nasty to Christianity here, is it from a person who moved here from up North or out West? I thought Southerners had a reputation of being the Bible Belt. I just saw a Gospel tract torn up into small pieces in the post office. I can understand that in Spokane or Boise where I came fron, but not Knoxville.
